Laura Helmuth, PhD was most recently Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American. She previously worked as an editor for the Washington Post, National Geographic, Slate, Smithsonian and Science. She is a former president of the National Association of Science Writers. She is currently a member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s standing committee on advancing science communication and an advisory board member for SciLine and The Transmitter. She has a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience from the University of California, Berkeley. She recently won a Friend of Darwin Award from the National Center for Science Education. David H. Gorski, MD, PhD, FACS is Professor of Surgery and Oncology at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a surgical oncologist at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute specializing in breast cancer surgery. He also serves as faculty in the WSU Graduate Program in Cancer Biology. Over the last two decades, his research has been funded by the NIH, the Department of Defense, the Conquer Cancer Foundation, and others, and been published in Cancer Research, Clinical Cancer Research, Blood, Nature Reviews Cancer, and Nature. Dr. Gorski first became interested in pseudoscience and “alternative” medicine around 2000, when quite by accident he wandered into the Usenet newsgroup misc.health.alternative and began critically examining the claims there.
Dr Gordon Guyatt, MD is Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University in Toronto. Dr Guyatt coined the term “Evidence-Based Medicine” and played a key role in the development of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, now adopted by more than 120 organizations worldwide. He is one of Canada’s most cited researchers with over 1,200 publications. According to the Web of Science he has been cited over 240,000 times, according to Google Scholar over 340, 000 times. He is considered a world authority in the fields of health-related quality of life research, study design, systematic reviews, and guideline development.
